Three-decade female gamer here...and I have absolutely no issue with playing a male character in this setting.
And with the special ops feel of the game, I think it would detract from the realistic feel of the graphic slaying and hanging from the fingertips from ledges if the character were a petite female.
Did "Lara Croft Tomb Raider" come with a male version? It's an honest question---I was playing strategy games on PCs at the time and never played that line.
In any case, I don't think that games absolutely need to offer both genders, and I am very pleased with this game. We bought it last week and both my husband and I are very pleased with the gameplay.
